THE PEOPLE'S POPE
Pope Francis, who died this Monday at the age of 88, will be remembered for his ongoing fight against poverty and his defense of the dispossessed; his support for illegal emigration in the process of expulsion; and for all those who could be described as Victor Hugo's "miserables." For all these reasons, he is considered "The People's Pope."
Francis criticized the wealthy for not doing enough to alleviate poverty. At the same time, he lamented the people forced to sleep on the streets; those who lack courage have to search for food in garbage containers.
On another note, Francis was willing to reform the Roman Curia and some of the foundations of the Church. He favored welcoming homosexuals within it; and he also favored ending the celibacy imposed under the form of perpetual vows.
Was Francis a left-wing Pope? He rejected it for his political reasons, insisting that the reforms he desired responded to a "need" of the times. However, this situation led the Curia to divide between those who supported him and those who criticized him, both veiledly.
Francis knew that the reforms he desired in the Church would take a long time to achieve. Several Cardinals made it clear to him that they would never accept homosexuals or the discontinuation of celibacy. The Pope struggled with poverty, but he felt powerless to advance the path of reform.
Instead of being buried in the Vatican cellars, as has been traditional for three centuries, Francis has chosen to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. His tomb will have no decorations, and on the tombstone there will be a single Latin word, "Franciscus."
In his will, Pope Francis reflects on "his suffering, which manifested itself in the last part of his life.""I offered it to the Lord for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples," he wrote. President Donald Trump, a symbol of the capitalism that Francis criticized, will attend the Pope's funeral. The US flag has been lowered to half-staff as a sign of respect.
The world now discovers a Pontiff willing to change some of the Church's most important rules. Accepting homosexuality and breaking celibacy are among them.. In Spain, the government to describe François as a transforming role will not last forever." Je tiens à exprimer, au nom du président et du gouvernement espagnol, notre douleur et nos plus sinceres condoléances à l'occasion de la disparition du pape François", declared M. Felix Bolanos, Minister of the Presidency.
