THE GOLDEN CENTURIES OF AL-ANDALUS
For a good part of 700 years, Arabs, Berbers and Christians lived in peace and perfect coexistence in Al-Andalus. They were golden centuries for the Muslims who built architectural treasures such as the Alhambra of Garnata and the Karouan mosque. The Arabs led the world in science, astronomy, surgery, mathematics, art and literature.
But there was also a fitna that began in 1009 with a coup d'état and a popular uprising in Córdoba that led to the murder of Abderramán Sanchuelo, son of Almanzor, the deposition of the caliph Hisham II and the rise to power of Muhammad ibn Hisham ibn Abd al. -Jabbar, great-grandson of Abd al-Rahman III. Divided the entire Andalusian territory into a series of taifa kingdoms, it is considered that the fitna came to an end with the definitive abolition of the Caliphate in 1031.
