HANIYEH: UNCERTAINTIES AND CHAOS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

The assassination of the political leader of the Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran undoubtedly opens a major crisis in the Middle East, provoked by Israel with its ambition to kill all those it considers its “enemies”, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, and also outside the Arab world.

Haniyeh died, torn apart by a missile or a drone launched by the Israeli air force on the house where he was staying. He had arrived in Tehran to attend the installation of the new president of the Islamic republic, Masoud Pezeshkian. Israel knew this thanks to the monitoring of the Palestinian leaders by the American military satellite system, shared with the Jewish state.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Netanyahu, confirmed his responsibility in this assassination, stating that “in recent days we have crushed some of our enemies. It is our duty.”

Haniyeh was not a radical character within the Palestinian microcosm. On the contrary, he was a reformist who defended the peace talks held under the mediation of Qatar and Egypt.

When, last June, Israeli forces killed his wife and three children by firing a missile at the car in which they were traveling in Gaza, Haniyeh said that “despite the great pain I suffer with these deaths, the peace negotiations must continue until an agreement is reached that allows a ceasefire.”

After this murder, the future of the peace negotiations is in limbo. Netanyahu has again stated that he “prefers that the war” continue until the elimination of the main leaders of Hamas. But this movement is not limited to a group of people. Beyond that, it is an idea anchored in the heads of thousands of young Palestinians who fight for the creation of an independent Palestine.

Israel could have killed Haniyeh when he lived in Doha, where he was perfectly located, but the Netanyahu government did not want to cloud its relations with the emirate and waited for the opportunity. This happened when the Palestinian political leader arrived in Tehran. He was staying in a residence of former soldiers. Israel knew this and was quick to end the life of this reformist who was seeking a peace solution that would end the war.

Washington has denied that it was informed by Israel of its intention to assassinate the Palestinian leader. The United States regrets that the hatred and anger of the Palestinians against the Jewish state will increase to limits that could destabilize the region. Lebanon fears that Israel will continue to attack the positions of the Hezbollah movement on the border and even in other parts of the country, including Beirut.

We are facing a chaotic situation opened by Israel, with its policy of maintaining the war and not negotiating. The Arab nations now realize the error of maintaining relations with the Hebrew state, which continues to use a policy of terror.
