WESTERN COUNTRIES SUPPORT ARAB PEACE PLAN
Four major Western countries have expressed their support for the Arab peace plan unveiled in Egypt, which contains three phases. The second phase is to continue the ceasefire in Gaza and to study the conditions in favour of the beginning of reconstruction.
France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy believe that the second phase of the plan is important in order to prevent the war from re-igniting in the Palestinian enclave and to continue to improve the lives of the inhabitants of Gaza who have returned to their homes, most of which are completely destroyed.
But the main objective is to prevent Israel from breaking the provisional ceasefire and resuming the bombings and again the war continues causing hundreds of deaths. So far, 48,000 Palestinians have died due to the aggression of the Jewish state.
We are at a crucial moment; Either the ceasefire and negotiations to rebuild Gaza continue, in another six-month ceasefire, or the war returns.
The plan also supports the creation of an “administrative independence committee” that Israel has rejected. The United States has also stated that it will not support such an institution.
The statement of the Arab plan said Hamas “must neither govern Gaza nor be a threat to Israel any more” and that the four countries “support the central role for the Palestinian Authority and the implementation of its reform agenda.
The United States, by its art, has made it known that it supports the continuation of the ceasefire in the enclave, but as for the second phase, Washington expresses its reservations, since it ignores the role that Israel should have and its responsibilities. A definitive ceasefire continues to be criticized by both Washington and Tel Aviv.
Incoming army chief Zamir and the Israeli government's plans to resume the war are fraught with dangers and pitfalls ■ Although the event of IDF Spokesperson Hagari's ouster has been exaggerated, Zamir's handling of the situation is worrying, says the newspaper Haaretz.
