MOROCCO CANNOT FORCE SPAIN TO CHANGE ITS POSITION
Once again, the Alawite kingdom has pressured Spain so that, instead of respecting international legality, it violates United Nations resolutions and betrays its own history by ceding Western Sahara to Morocco.
It is a question of history and principles. Western Sahara is a non-autonomous territory registered with the United Nations decolonization commission, which supports the holding of a self-determination referendum, which Morocco opposes, claiming that "it would no longer serve any purpose".
Rabat wants Spain to side with it, which would mean betraying the Saharawi people and its legitimate representative, the Polisario front, and opening a crisis with incalculable consequences with Algeria.
That Spain wants the best relations with a neighbor cannot pass through the betrayal of its own interests. Morocco has already used blackmail several times; remember the illegal entry into Ceuta of thousands of young people as a measure of pressure for having welcomed, for humanitarian reasons, the Saharawi leader, Brahim Ghali.
You have to be healthy. The pressure and blackmail from Morocco will not cease and the Spanish government must make it clear that no one dictates its policy or its decisions in strategic matters. We are witnessing a grotesque situation: A country without the right to occupy a territory seeks allies who pay homage to it and meet its demands without stopping to take into account its serious consequences. Ignorant of history and politics in the Maghreb, President Trump did not care about jumping international law by supporting the "Moroccan" nature of the former Spanish colony, as long as Morocco became a partner and ally of Israel. Morocco, on the other hand, has made its demand to Spain coincide with the tour of the UN special envoy for Western Sahara, De Mistura, who is responsible for finding a solution that maintains the right of the Saharawis to choose their destiny.
