TENSION IN THE MAGHREB
Morocco has shown its irritation and disagreement with Tunisia, after its president, Kais Saied, received the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, with honors at the airport.
The Saharawi leader was invited to a meeting between Japan and African countries, known as the "Tokyo Summit for Development in Africa" (TICAD)
Tunisia justified the invitation to Ghali by having previously attended this summit on other occasions. Ghali was also invited to the summit between the European Union and Africa, which took place in Brussels last February.
But the problem is that Morocco considers Ghali a "terrorist" for leading a movement (Front Polisario) that rejects Morocco's proposal for autonomy for the territory of Western Sahara.
Tunisia says it is neutral in this conflict, but Ghali's presence annoys Morocco, which has accused the Tunisian president of having provoked "a serious and unprecedented act". The two ambassadors have been called for consultation by their goverments.
