Algeria and France are continuing their rapprochement
Algeria and France are continuing their rapprochement which began last August with the “successful” visit of President Emmanuel Macron.
ANP Chief of Staff General of the Army Said Chanegriha ended his four-day visit to France with a meeting with his French counterpart, General of the Army Thierry Burkhard.
Army General Saïd Chanegriha had intense activity in the French capital, where he stayed for four days.
He was notably received by French President Emmanuel Macron, to whom he delivered a message from the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and by the French Minister for the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu.
Saïd Chanegriha also visited French army training schools. The two countries remained more or less discreet on the substance of the discussions between the head of the Algerian army and his French counterparts, contenting themselves with evoking the protocol aspects.
According to the DND, the two chiefs of staff examined during their last meeting, this Thursday, "the prospects and the ways to consolidate cooperation in the two military and security fields".
At the end of December, President Tebboune welcomed the security cooperation between Algeria and France at the highest level, which took "a big step".
In any case, the visit remains historic in more ways than one. First, it is a first for an Algerian chief of staff since that carried out in 2006 by Ahmed-Gaid Salah.
Then, it occurs in a context of warming relations between the two countries after a serious quarrel. Less than 18 months ago, Algiers and Paris were on the brink of rupture following the French president's remarks on Algeria, its history and its leaders.
But things gradually returned to normal. Emmanuel Macron visited Algeria last August, a “very successful” visit as his Algerian counterpart called it, followed in October by that of his Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne accompanied by 16 ministers.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune is also expected in Paris next May. The two presidents, who have cordial relations, are committed to opening "a new era" and a "relationship of trust".
The French Minister for the Armed Forces also spoke of "rapprochement in the fields of defense" with this visit by Mr. Chanegriha which "is part of the extension of Emmanuel Macron's trip to Algeria".
