THE SPANISH CITY OF BARCELONA BREAKS WITH ISRAEL

The Municipal Council of Barcelona (a Spanish Mediterranean city) has made the decision to break relations with Israel due to "the continuous violations of human rights with the Palestinian people."

Most of the councilors are from the radical left and have taken this step, which has no influence on relations between the governments of Madrid and Tel Aviv.

The mayor, Ana Colau, stated that she hopes that this decision will be "temporary" and that they will once again maintain relations with Israel and, in particular, the mayors of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

“We have also decided to suspend the brotherhood agreement between Barcelona and Tel Aviv for the same reasons, but we maintain the same type of agreement with the Palestinian city of Gaza,” she said Colau.

ARABINFOCUS asked Colau: "Until when are they going to maintain this decision", giving as an answer: "until the Israeli authorities put an end to the systematic violation of human rights against the Palestinian population"

Actually, this decision has been taken because the associations of Palestinians residing in Barcelona presented a motion entitled “Barcelona is not with Apartheid. He is with human rights”.

Colau explained that he has sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Israel, Beniamin Netanyahu, in which he writes that "the number and severity of human rights violations documented by international organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories have increased and have entered into a new era of impunity that forces us to take action; we cannot remain immobile before the violation of international law.

Contrary to this position, the socialist municipal group considers that the unilateral decision of the mayor is a very serious mistake, and the advisers of the right-wing party (PP) accused the mayor of "sowing hatred" against the State of Israel and the Minister of Foreign Action, Victòria Alsina, called the decision a "huge mistake".

The Palestinian organizations in Barcelona have congratulated themselves on "a decision that is a very courageous step".

The decision of the mayoress of Barcelona also found yesterday the reaction of the Israeli Government. The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country, Lior Haiat, described the decision as "regrettable" and "totally against the opinion of the majority of the citizens of Barcelona
