THE DEFEAT OF NETANYAHU

Benjamin Netanyahu and the far-right government, with the participation of religious radicals, have been forced to suspend the judicial reform that they had prepared in the face of the popular outcry of thousands of citizens who condemn the terms of this reform that violates the principle of independence. of the judiciary.

Netanyahu has suspended the project but has not annulled it as the protesters claim, so we will have to wait this summer to see if the crisis occurs again.

In terms of democracy, the now-suspended judicial reform has no value. Its objective is to give parliamentarians a higher authority than judges and magistrates. This is clearly undemocratic.

But this is Netanyahu's style. This man cannot be trusted. It has been seen when another of the Likud leaders, the former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, was dismissed for having required, precisely, a pause in the study of the reform.

The thousands of demonstrators who have walked the streets of various cities in Israel have indicated that they will continue protesting as long as the reform is not completely annulled. “We don't want a pause; what we want is the annulment of a measure that violates democracy,” protester Yehuda Fischer told ARABINFOCUS. This is the biggest crisis that Israel has experienced since the first settlers arrived in Palestine aboard the ship "Exodus", when the territory was under the control of the British army.

"There will not be a civil war," Netanyahu assured, but if he had not suspended the reform, it is not known what would have happened.
