BRINGING SYRIA BACK TO ARAB LEAGUE?
According to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry released yesterday, the meeting attended by all members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) focused on the importance for Arab countries to "play a leading role in initiatives to end the crisis" in Syria. They dialogued around the "mechanisms necessary for this role and agreed to increase consultations between Arab countries to guarantee the success of these efforts", continues the same source.
As at the Arab Summit in Algiers, countries including Algeria expressed the wish to see Syria resume its place in the Arab League. This is the case of Saudi Arabia, which severed relations with Damascus in 2012 but recently renewed contact with the Syrian authorities. In March, Syria and Saudi Arabia had discussions on resuming their consular services and, on Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Moqdad was received by his Saudi counterpart, Faisal Ben Farhane, for the first visit of its kind since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011.
n a joint statement, the two officials effectively confirmed the goal of “bringing Syria back into the Arab fold.” Riyadh hopes this can be done on the occasion of the next summit of the pan-Arab organization, which is scheduled to be held on May 19 in Saudi Arabia.
However, the question of Syria's return to the Arab League is not unanimous. The Jeddah meeting showed that a number of countries are in no rush to see Damascus resume its seat in Cairo. Qatar, for example, remains hostile to normalization with Bashar Al Assad. On Thursday, its Prime Minister, Mohammed Ben Abdelrahmane Al Thani, also qualified as "speculation" the declarations on a return of Syria to the Arab League, judging that the reasons for his expulsion were still relevant. "The decision is up to the Syrian people," he added.
