BERLUSCONI DIES AT 86

Silvio Berlusconi, three times Prime Minister of Italy and owner of the Mediaset media empire, the man who revolutionized telecommunications and went through hundreds of legal and personal scandals, died this Monday due to various heart complications.

The billionaire businessman, who created Italy’s largest media company before transforming the political landscape, had suffered several bouts of ill health in recent months.

And with him, who united politics and the person like few others, a historic era in Italian politics that began in the last decade of the last century came to a close, when for the first time the billionaire tycoon decided to go down into politics and took a turn that few they saw coming.

It has been three decades in which the four-time prime minister and founder of Mediaset dominated the public scene in his country not only as the boss of the party he had founded in 1994 and of which he was still the leader, Forza Italia (FI), but also as the protagonist of conflicts of interest, laws approved for his personal benefit.
