THE RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF

In a conventional war, the contenders have the right to defend themselves against attacks. No one denies Israel that right; but it cannot be denied to Hamas either. Israel affirms that it fights with terrorism, while politicians and pro-Palestinian groups in Europe defend that the aggressions of the Al-Qassam brigades are “actions of war.”

On the seventh day of the war the dead accumulate. Israel recognizes 1,400 dead and nearly 2,500 wounded. Hamas estimates that at least 1,500 people, soldiers and civilians, have died in its territory, while the injured number in the thousands.

Israel continues to cut off electricity, water and fuel to the Palestinian strip. The situation is terrible because even the hospitals are using up their last liters of fuel and the injured may begin to lose their lives.

The Palestinian president, Mahmud Abbas, has demanded an immediate end to the aggressions against the Palestinian people in a meeting with the King of Jordan, Abdullah II. Aman has sent $4.3 million to UNRWA, which cares for refugees.

This war is going to fuel hatred between the two communities. Clashes between Arab and Jewish residents have already occurred in France. And it will be very difficult to reestablish the ties of good coexistence between the two parties.

Israel does not stop bombing Gaza, in such an intense way that it is disproportionate to the attacks by Hamas. The Zionist state aims to destroy the infrastructure of the Palestinians and does not seem to care that thousands of civilians die under the bombings.

There are terrible images of Palestinian children rescued from the ruins of homes, many of them seriously injured. Other children cry while waiting to be taken to the hospitals. Blood flows from their wounds, but the most terrible thing is the faces of horror and despair waiting for the arrival of the first responders.

There is no worse horror than the violent death of innocent children. They have died on both sides in combat, but it is the Palestinians who bear the brunt.

The United Nations has warned that war would have devastating consequences if Israel invades the Gaza Strip. The Jewish state has already planned an action of such importance, but for the moment has not given it the green light.
