EUROMEDITERRANEAN FORUM DEMANDS PERMANENT CEASE-FIRE IN GAZA

The 7th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) today demanded that Israel accept a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as the first important step to reach a political solution to the existing conflict between the Jewish state and the radical group Hamas.

The Forum met in the Spanish city of Barcelona to address the conflict in Israel and Palestine, while the six-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which began on Friday, is still in force. Initially, a 4-day humanitarian pause was approved.

This meeting takes place in an international context marked by the war between Israel and Hamas, although it coincides with the first truce between both parties after more than a month and a half of war. The Forum discussed the current state of the conflict with the aim of laying a common approach and foundation for lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Forum was co-chaired by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, and by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan, Ayman Safadi. Israel has refused to participate in this meeting because it believes that “it will be the subject of inappropriate criticism.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the time has come for the international community and the EU to recognize a Palestinian state during a trip with his Belgian counterpart to Israel, the Palestinian territories and Egypt last week.

The Israeli authorities have stated that they are holding "discussions" regarding the list provided by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) of hostages who will be released in the coming hours. Israel adds 50 Palestinians, including the famous young activist, Ahed Tamimi, to the list of releases due to the agreement with Hamas.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, attended on behalf of the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee.
