THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HAMAS
On October 7 of last year, the “Al Qasam” brigades dependent on Hamas committed a massacre in Israeli territory, killing some 1,200 Jewish civilians and taking another 250 hostages to Gaza.
How to qualify that attack? There is only one word: it was a terrorist act that lacked the slightest justification. The desperation of the Palestinian people, particularly the youth, for not seeing the existence of a free and independent Palestine is understandable. It is also understandable that Israel's violence in the West Bank and Gaza is responded to with violence, in legitimate defense.
But on October 7, Hamas committed a terrorist act that it should never have carried out. Hamas knew that Israel would respond to the massacre with far greater violence. The Gaza war began, and Netanyahu's government charged its invading forces with three main objectives: eliminate every last man of "Al Qasam" and the political leadership of Hamas; turn Gaza into a field of ruins and free the hostages.
To date, more than 37,000 Palestinian civilians have died in the bombings on Gaza. The destruction of the Palestinian enclave is more than 40 percent, and as for the hostages, a first exchange of a few of them was reached through the Red Cross. Negotiations on a second humanitarian pause that could lead to a ceasefire remain blocked.
After committing a terrorist massacre, Hamas would have to make an act of contrition and support a new peace agreement. The American president, Joe Biden, is the author of the latest initiative: Ceasefire; release of the hostages and partial withdrawal of the Jewish troops. Netanyahu wants to continue the war and Hamas wants to modify Biden's plan, which is another mistake.
Hamas must support that plan and leave Israel more isolated than ever internationally. He doesn't and the war and savage bombings continue.
Hamas bears full responsibility for the massacre of October 7, and for the beginning of the war. It is an undeniable fact. He committed a despicable act; and although the president, Recip Erdogan, calls its members “freedom fighters,” the group's moral obligation is immense.
Israel's response has resulted in a large number of war crimes that have led to genocide. True, but Hamas's responsibility cannot be set aside or forgotten.
