GAZA: THE LAST CHANCE?

The United States has appealed to Hamas to accept the amendments to the peace plan prepared by the president, Joe Biden, because “it is the last opportunity to reach a permanent ceasefire and the end of the war.”

These are the words of Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, upon arriving in Cairo where the mediators (United States, Qatar and Egypt) and the two parties in conflict are negotiating; Israel and Hamas.

Hamas had accepted the American plan, but stated that the amendments presented a few days ago by Washington and Israel change in favor of the Jewish state, and that is why they cannot accept it. “They have presented us with new conditions, and we cannot accept it,” said a spokesman for the radical Palestinian movement.

This situation leads to a very tragic moment for the hostages held by Hamas, who are still alive. The bodies of six captives were located by the Jewish army, and Hamas released a video in which four other captives appear asking Netanyahu's government to once and for all sign an agreement with Hamas that allows their release.

One of the unresolved issues is Hamas's claim to control a corridor between Gaza and Egypt, which Israel has no intention of giving up.

On the other hand, Iran has stated that it will “let some time pass” before carrying out retaliation against Israel, together with the Hezbollah movement. Washington wants these reprisals not to lead to a regional conflict.

Medical sources in the Gaza Strip claim that in the last 24 hours, Israeli air strikes have caused the death of another 52 Palestinians. Israel claims, for its part, that the people who died in Rafah and Khan Yunes were not civilians but members of the “Al Qasam” brigade, in the service of Hamas.

Reality shows that Netanyahu does not want to give up control of Gaza at any price, once the war is over. This is one of the biggest points of conflict, although the United States maintains that Gaza will be run by Palestinians. These are good words, but there are no guarantees that they will become a reality.
