ARABS AND AFRICANS DEMAND REFORM OF UNITED NATIONS
On the occasion of the UN General Assembly, Arab and African countries have once again called for reform of the Security Council, with the aim of obtaining two permanent seats on it. This request, unfortunately, does not have the support of the current permanent representatives: the USA, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom.
It is an old aspiration. The Security Council has the power to veto a resolution and the countries that demand reform believe that they should have this privilege, given that they have never obtained it. All they have are temporary seats on this body. The United States and Russia are the two members that have vetoed resolutions the most.
The Council is expected to discuss the war in Lebanon launched by Israel, with the aim of punishing Hezbollah. In the attacks carried out on Monday, 492 Lebanese were killed and another 1,642 were injured, according to figures from the Ministry of Health in Beirut.
‘
Israel and Hezbollah continue to attack each other. The radical Lebanese movement claims to have hit an Israeli explosives factory with several missiles. Israel said on Tuesday that it had attacked dozens of positions of the radical movement in the south of the country of the cedars.
We have reached two wars and the Jewish state intervenes on two fronts without any signs of a peaceful solution. In Gaza, the Israeli strikes continue. At the UN General Assembly, the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohamed Mustafa, has stated that ‘Israel’s genocidal war has caused unprecedented human losses, becoming a humanitarian catastrophe. ’
Not all Israelis support the intervention in Lebanon. In the daily “Maariv” a former general, Roman Manelis, expresses his disagreement with the Netanyahu government, and points out that “Israel is making a fundamental mistake.”
It is true, because when one war is added to another, it is a great tactical error. The dictator Adolf Hitler should never have invaded the Soviet Union when it was already fighting against Western countries. This invasion, as is known, precipitated the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Meanwhile, Iran has not retaliated against the Hebrew state for the assassination in Tehran of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. This decision can be described as positive at the moment, although there is no indication that the Iranians have communicated it to President Joe Biden, in order to show their support for peace in the region.
