CHINA TAKES A STANCE ON THE WARS IN UKRAINE AND GAZA
Finally, China, which has been adopting a position of discreet support for Russia regarding the war in Ukraine, has broken its silence by stating this Friday through its Minister of Defense that in these two wars there can be no winner and that, therefore, they must be stopped as soon as possible and an appropriate solution negotiated.
It is very possible that this declaration by the minister, Dong Jun, did not please Prime Minister Netanyahu, because he maintains and continues with the purpose that the war must continue until Hamas disappears. As for Ukraine, President Putin is less demanding and proposes to negotiate the end of the conflict, to avoid, according to him, a direct confrontation with NATO.
This new exit by China responds to the desire of President Xi Jinping to reinforce his stature as an international leader, who must be counted on in conflict situations. Until now his greatest success has been the reconciliation and the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Something unimaginable not many years ago.
It could be said that this is a chess game between Xi Jinping and Putin, in which the Chinese enjoys superiority because the Russian hates games in which the brain has to function at its maximum. Putin is a man of action. He was one as a secret agent of the KGB. Nothing to do with a Xi Jinping admirer of the works of Confucius.
After having become a world superpower in the economic field, capable of competing with the United States, Xi Jinping wants to enhance his international personality as a peacemaker and reconciliator; all of this as a substratum aimed at putting China at the head of the world.
When China says that Putin and Zelensky must negotiate, this means breaking a discreet silence to activate the role of mediator of the Chinese. We will see it perhaps in the next days or weeks.
The case of Gaza is different. Putin is not going to start arguing with Hamas, and here Xi Jinping is proposing a truce that will lead to a greater role between Abbas and Russia; but on condition that the Palestinians break definitively with the terrorist groups that continue to exist in Gaza.
Apart from all this, we must highlight the reception held this Friday in Istanbul for the body of the human rights defender, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi; born in Turkey and naturalized in the United States. She was killed by a shot to the head fired by an Israeli sniper when she was demonstrating against Israel in the West Bank.
