American Elections

IF TRUMP IS RE-ELECTED, WILL IT BE BAD NEWS FOR ARABS?

There are only 13 days left for the American presidential elections. The latest polls on Arab Americans indicate that they will vote for Trump in their majority, even though they know that he is a declared accomplice of Israel and supports the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

It seems incredible that Arab-Americans give their votes to Trump; which in a way would be ignoring Israel's genocide in Gaza and the aggression against the land of the cedars. Do they ignore that the real estate magnate, if he wins, will support the new war crimes that Netanyahu will probably carry out?

Supporting Trump is going against the majority opinion of Arabs and other Muslims about the man who has advised Netanyahu to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities.

With Trump in the White House, will Israel continue to violate human rights and international law? And will its great American ally continue to pressure Arab leaders who do not recognize Israel to do so without a guilty conscience?

Fortunately, there are Arab leaders with great honor, such as Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman, who has reiterated his position: His country will not recognize Israel as long as there is no independent Palestinian State. This is a fair position, which Americans of Arab origin should understand before casting their vote.

Qatar is on the same line as MBS according to the opinion of those of us who make ARABINFOCUS. With more than 42,000 Palestinians already killed in Gaza by Jewish armed forces, voting for Trump in America will be an act of enormous indignity.

What did Trump do in his first term with regard to Arab leaders? He told them: “Recognize Israel and ask me for whatever you want, and I will grant it to you in return.”

As an example of this, we can again cite the case of Morocco, which recognised Israel in exchange for Trump admitting that Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is the property of Rabat. The then US president accepted this, without taking into account that the United Nations maintains that territory under the obligation to ask its legitimate inhabitants to decide on its future in a self-determination referendum.

The US ambassador in Rabat was quick to show up in El Aaiun, the capital of Western Sahara, and declare “This is Morocco. This Sahara is the property of Morocco.” And he remained calm.

A totally illegal unilateral decision, because the Sahrawis have never considered themselves Moroccan citizens, although it is true that in the past they paid homage to the Alawite Sultan. They did so without recognising his authority.

With Trump in the White House, for the second time, it will be necessary to bear in mind that his two great friends are called: Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu. During his election campaign, the tycoon promised to end the war in Ukraine. And on that point, we have to believe him.

Why? Because Putin is willing to make concessions to Trump without giving up his interests in Ukraine. Putin can grant Trump the withdrawal of Russian troops in exchange for Zelensky renting the Crimean peninsula to Moscow for 100 years, renewable. This would not be a novelty, since a similar situation was in force before Putin invaded the neighbouring country.

And so, Putin will allow Trump to proclaim himself the “great hero” who ended the war in Ukraine. But the cases of Gaza and Lebanon are very different.
