FRANCE ACCUSES ISRAEL OF “SOWING BARBARISM”
French President Emmanuel Macron accused Israel of “sowing barbarism” in Gaza and Lebanon. He did so in a speech in Paris on Thursday, at the start of an international conference to collect aid for Lebanon, victim of the war declared by the Hebrew state.
“A civilization does not defend itself by sowing barbarism. Causing more damage; more victims; more bombings; will not put an end to terrorism or to the insecurity of all,” stressed Macron, in an open and harsh condemnation of the aggressions committed by Israel, through Prime Minister Netanyahu, in Gaza and Lebanon.
"I am sure of one thing. It is that the possibility of a civilization is at stake in Lebanon," said the President of the Republic. Delivering his vision of a country where "women and men whose origins and religions are different share the same territory and live for the same project,"
A total of 70 countries and 15 international organizations are participating in the Paris conference, the main objective of which is to raise $1 billion for Lebanon. Macron has contributed $100 million, and about $200 million will be given to the Lebanese forces for their modernization, while the rest will be for actions in favor of the population that continues to be affected by Jewish aviation.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is back in the Middle East to seek peace and a ceasefire from Israel and the other combatants.
As usual, Blinken has not put pressure on Netanyahu, nor has he urged him to accept a ceasefire. While the Secretary of State was speaking, Israel continued to receive planes, missiles, drones and other military equipment sent by the White House.
Heavy bombings continue to hit Lebanon. The southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, were targeted Wednesday evening by 17 Israeli strikes that destroyed several buildings and caused a huge explosion. According to the Lebanese news agency Ani, these are the most significant bombings in this area since the start of the war between Israel and the pro-Iranian Islamist movement a month ago.
For its part, Hezbollah claimed Wednesday to have fired rockets at a military base and a military industrial site near Tel Aviv, the large city in the center of the country, and targeted two other military bases near Haifa, in the north. At least 1,552 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the Israeli airstrike campaign. Three Arab journalists were killed in one of the bombs.
