POPE ACCUSES ISRAEL OF CARRYING OUT GENOCIDE IN GAZA
Pope Francis has stepped out of his usual reserve to say on Sunday that the continued bombing of Gaza by Israeli forces, which has killed at least a dozen people a day, clearly constitutes “genocide.”
This is the first time that the Pope has called for an investigation into Israeli aggression in the Palestinian enclave, adding that “the allegations of genocide by Israel must be taken into account,” an accusation made by more than a hundred international humanitarian organizations, as well as agencies that depend on the United Nations.
In September, he said Israel’s attacks in Gaza and Lebanon have been “immoral” and disproportionate, and that its military has gone beyond the rules of war.
Pope Francis’s voice represents an accusation that will be welcomed by the millions of Catholics around the world. His words call for a mobilization of Christian believers to continue their demonstrations in favor of negotiations for a truce, followed by a ceasefire, in the Palestinian enclave.
In the universities of the United States, where thousands of students have demonstrated in the streets against Israel, His Holiness's declaration has been received with support, while Israel's ignorance of the accusations that make it a pariah state has been denounced.
“According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide,” the pope said in excerpts published Sunday by the Italian daily La Stampa.
The Pope supports the peace negotiations that have been held for months with the mediation of Qatar and Egypt, as well as the participation of representatives of the United States and Israel. These conversations are currently paralyzed.

Lebanese authorities announced on Monday that the main spokesman of Hezbollah, Mohamed Afif, was killed in a bombing raid by the Israeli air force on Beirut the day before in the Ras-El-Nabaa district.
This fact shows that Israel has gone from assassinating the main leaders of the Lebanese Shiite movement to eliminating lesser figures who do not directly participate in the reprisals against the aggressions of the Jewish forces.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has expressed on several occasions that one of his objectives is to destroy Hezbollah, regardless of the members targeted by the deadly attacks.
