GAZA: QATAR SUSPENDS ITS MEDIATION EFFORTS
In the face of the difficulties expressed by Israel and the frustration with the blockage of negotiations in Gaza to reach at least a provisional truce, Qatar, the main mediator in this conflict, announced this Saturday that it has decided to suspend its mediation.
This decision was expected after the failure of various meetings in Doha, Cairo and Paris, in which Qatar, Egypt, Israel and the United States participated. The heads of intelligence of the Israeli Mossad and the American CIA also met separately, with the same result evident in the negative attitude shown by the Jewish Prime Minister, Netanyahu, who is in favour of continuing the war.
Qatari negotiator Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has repeatedly tried to push the process forward, but has been repeatedly frustrated by the negative attitude of other negotiating parties, including the radical group Hamas, which refused to release the hostages in its possession unless a permanent ceasefire was established. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's offer did not go beyond a truce lasting less than 30 days.
However, the Qatari emirate has reportedly promised to return to the negotiation framework if there is a change in the negative position of Israel's representatives supported by Washington. The re-election of Donald Trump confirms and supports the negative attitude of Netanyahu and his mediators.
It should also be noted that while negotiations were blocked, Israeli military forces continued and continue to bomb northern Gaza, causing hundreds of deaths among the Palestinian population in the last two weeks.
Israel has also restricted access to food and water in several Palestinian refugee camps, condemning them to lose their lives if the ban on the entry of essential aid is maintained, particularly for women and children. This is a double game by Netanyahu, who talks about allowing the entry of food, but in reality reduces or suspends it. More than 43,000 Palestinians have already died due to attacks by Jewish forces.
UNRWA, vetoed by Tel Aviv, says “famine is likely happening in northern Gaza” as a doctor flags “alarming cases of malnutrition” among children and adults.
