SAUDI ARABIA AND FRANCE ESTABLISH STRATEGIC RELATIONS.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman Al Saud met in Riyadh on Monday with the aim of establishing strategic relations in both countries and contributing to creating an atmosphere of peace in the Middle East, where the situation remains tense due to the war in Gaza and violations of the peace agreement established between Israel and the Shiite group Hezbollah.

France, which is part of the observation force on the Lebanese border, said it had verified 52 violations of the agreement by Israel. The Hebrew state claims that Hezbollah has also violated the agreement, although for the moment a fragile peace remains between the two warring parties.

Macron's state visit has various political and economic objectives. France hopes to sell Riyadh a number of Rafale fighter planes built by Dassault, and it is worth noting that the French oil company Total is building a huge plastics manufacturing plant at a cost of 11 billion dollars. Within the framework of strategic relations, defence and energy should be highlighted as key areas, as well as culture. Macron is interested in promoting the teaching of French in the Arab country.

Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salman is modernizing Saudi Arabia at a rapid pace and has set himself the goal of getting the country out of "all oil" to develop other sectors, such as tourism, sport, culture and also renewable energies with a vast investment plan with a vision of 2030. But because of the very volatile price of black gold, Riyadh has just decided to reduce the size of its investments abroad or even its mega project of linear life in the middle of the desert, which will ultimately be much smaller than expected. It is not yet the crisis, but in this context, it is not certain that the French harvest of contracts will be as good as hoped by Paris.

Following the meeting, HRH the Crown Prince and President Macron witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the formation of the Strategic Partnership Council between the governments of Saudi Arabia and France, underlines the saudí press agency. The visit underscores the strengthening ties between Saudi Arabia and France, with discussions expected to focus on water resource sustainability and other key areas of cooperation, SPA added.
