GAZA; 33 HOSTAGES TO BE RELEASED

As usual, the terrorist movement, Hamas, has only released part of the hostages (33) held by its military branch, the Al Qassam brigades, while Israel approved a 45-day truce. A breath of hope makes it seem that definitive peace in Gaza is not far away.

Presidents Biden and Trump wanted all the hostages held by Hamas to be released, in exchange for a permanent ceasefire. That would put an end to a war that has caused more than 46,000 Palestinian deaths.

The main problem, however, remains for the moment. The Hamas brigades are not content with a provisional truce; they want Israel to commit to withdrawing all its military forces from Gaza. It would be a new beginning that Prime Minister Netanyahu rejects despite pressure from Washington.

Starting over is not what the most radical Jews, starting with Ben Gvir, are all about. They are willing to let the guns fall silent but refuse to leave the enclave and want to unite it with the West Bank in a single colony. Netanyahu, on the other hand, wants to make the military's departure a matter for the next phases of the agreement. They would accept that a few of them leave Gaza, but not all of them.

So we are in a familiar dilemma. Hamas does not want Jewish soldiers in Gaza; IDF does not want to leave for two reasons. The enclave will have a Jewish military presence, while Gaza would no longer be dominated by Hamas terrorists. A difficult situation to resolve, despite the mediation efforts of Doha and Cairo.

The key man who has achieved the agreement with Hamas, in its first phase, has been the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

How to fit all the pieces of this crossword? There is no other solution than the concession of both parties. And the mediators are working in this labyrinth. Israel and Hamas must give way. If Israel is to withdraw its forces, Hamas and its brigades must also abandon the enclave. Neither can win, but how is this building to be built? Gaza cannot be a second West Bank, where new settlements of settlers are to be created. Hence the idea of starting over.
