GAZA: WITHOUT A CEASEFIRE, THE GREAT CATASTROPHE
We must be optimistic and not lose hope that the ceasefire in Gaza, currently provisional, will be maintained, even if only in the same way. Because 376,000 Palestinians have already returned to the north of the enclave, where they had their homes. The figures are from the United Nations.
If Israel bombs the north of the territory again, the catastrophe would be of unimaginable proportions. Fortunately, the Jewish forces respect this temporary peace, as long as the Hamas group, branded as terrorists, continues to release hostages, even if only in small amounts.
It is necessary that the president, Donald Trump, make a gesture of humanity and prohibit the Prime Minister, Netanyahu, from resuming the bombing of Gaza, once all the hostages have been released.
This is what the mediators are working on: Qatar and Egypt; supported in the background by Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. The Palestinians in Gaza have already suffered enormously, with more than 36,000 victims. The figure is staggering and cannot be taken lightly.
It is true that Hamas, contrary to what Netanyahu wants, continues to exist. Its military wing has lost its leaders, in particular Yahia Sinwar, but it has not disappeared. Israel needs to show a little humanity, even though Trump maintains the madness of his plan to exile nearly 2 million Palestinians.
We are living in days in which tensions are reaching unsuspected limits. Israel, it is true, continues to bomb Lebanon, but all eyes are now focused on northern Gaza.
Trump continues to stand by Israel, supporting it in everything Netanyahu proposes. To say that the US president is at Netanyahu's command is excessive. But what may happen, although it may seem unlikely, is that in some aspects of the war, Trump and Netanyahu maintain some differences. They are not big, but they are differences.
The Haaretz says: Reviewing Trump's first weeks in office and their impact on the Middle East, amid reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be visiting the White House in coming days. Trump took dramatic steps with executive orders erasing what he could of President Joe Biden's legacy. This includes rescinding sanctions on violent extremist settlers in the West Bank, and lifting the only hold that Biden put on heavy payload weapons to Israel.
