SPAIN SUPPORTS THE CREATION OF A EUROPEAN ARMY
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has spoken out in favor of the creation of a European army, which would demonstrate the European Union's determination to establish a single defense framework and confirm its solidarity.
Almost at the same time, US President Donald Trump, with his somewhat violent temper, asserted that Europe's "existence" could disappear in its current form if it did not enjoy the "American nuclear umbrella."
Sánchez is designing a defense plan reminiscent of the old European collective security plan referred to by early European leaders, such as Robert Schumann. The project was never structured by internal divisions and compromises.
The theories that continue to prevail within the EU claim that Europeans alone do not have sufficient strength to confront a powerful enemy, such as Vladimir Putin's Russia.
But other European leaders reject this theory because it reflects a past in which political divisions on the old continent prevented reaching a collective agreement on matters as sensitive as mutual defense.
Sánchez is convinced that integration into a European army is possible because it would strengthen peace on the continent "without having to depend on other powers." The truth is that within the EU, this theory is not collectively supported. French President Macron is in favor of the Spanish president's project.
According to Pedro Sánchez, after what has happened in these three years of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, "in Europe, we also have to take a step toward integration, and in the future, I am convinced that we will achieve European armed forces," he emphasized.
France and Germany share the same vision of integration, since at the end of the Second World War, they created common defense units and established military bases in both countries, in order to suppress rivalry on both banks of the Rhine.
It is significant that Sánchez has agreed to dedicate 2 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to supporting NATO and EU military frameworks.
