AL ANDALUS IN THE HEART OF RIYADH

These were splendid centuries for the Arabs; golden centuries that should never be forgotten. Al Andalus led the world in several disciplines: mathematics; medicine; astronomy; but there were more. Associations promoting dialogue among civilizations held a tribute to Al Andalus in Riyadh at the end of March.

Among other aspects, Al Andalus became the capital of mathematics in the world. A number of experts in algebra (al-djabr); number theory; arithmetic; and geometry stood out there. But it would be a mistake to speak only of them, since the list of inventors is quite considerable.

But why are the Spanish interested in the past of Al Andalus? Because it represents the Age of Enlightenment, as Alejo Carpeentier would say. A time of conviviality and discoveries that live on in the memory.

The choice of Riyadh to celebrate this tribute is very significant, even though it was an artistic and cultural evening. And it is precisely because of art and culture that it takes us back to the glorious centuries of Al-Andalus.

And it should not be forgotten that, during the Middle Ages, the city of Córdoba was the main center of Andalusian thought. The Islamic legacy was united with European thought, making it one of the most influential cities in Europe.

Among Spaniards, the brilliance of this thought persists, originated by Arab philosophers who sought the meaning of life. Its mosque is one of the most important examples of Arab architecture. One's gaze lingers between the great columns that embellish it.

This gathering marks a new step in the foundation of a culture without borders. It serves as a tool to strengthen the ties between civilizations and highlight the beauty of their shared diversity. We live in an age of endless struggles, wars, and hatred among men. What a difference it makes to stop for a few minutes and remember that Al Andalus was a very different world that would give way to modernity.

Faith in Riyadh is concentrated around the city's more than 18,000 mosques and its numerous busy shopping centers. The city's central core and its many souks (marketplaces) attract heavy pedestrian traffic, emphasizing the city's intense feeling of vitality.

Note the difference. Last year, 3 million tourists visited Riyadh. The number of people who visited Al Andalus that same year rose to 36 million.
