SPAIN CANCELS ARMS SALES TO ISRAEL

The Spanish government has decided to cancel arms sales to Israel, amid its criticism and condemnation of the genocide carried out in Gaza by the Jewish state; a decision also supported by various international organizations.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, relations with Israel are going through a period of great tension. The most important event, among others, was Madrid's recognition of the State of Palestine. A decision shared by Ireland, Slovenia, and Norway. In total, 88 countries recognize Palestine as an independent state.

In May last year, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Albares, argued that "this is an act of justice towards the Palestinian people, an essential measure to guarantee Israel the security it rightfully demands and the only viable path to peace in the region: The Palestinian people have a right to a future of hope, just as the people of Israel have a right to a future of peace and security." And after so many decades of pain and confrontation, we know that there cannot be one without the other."

The virtually total support for Israel by the United States has mobilized European and Asian countries to condemn the aggression and war crimes committed by the Israeli armed forces against the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. More than 50,000 residents have died since October 8, 2023, as a result of bombing, missile fire, and artillery shelling by the Israeli forces.

The cancellation of an arms consignment, in the order of 6 million euros, is of little importance in the opinion of Prime Minister Netanyahu, as other arms contract projects with Tel Aviv for nearly 1 billion euros remain in place, reports the newspaper Haaretz.

Separately, Netanyahu has justified the dismissal of the head of the internal security services, Ronen Bar, in response to a request from the Palestinian Authority. High Court of Justice, which accuses him of supporting some anti-government demonstrations, in contradiction with the main mission of this organization.

The differences and rivalries between the various intelligence services is a well-known fact.

José Manuel Albares pressed the point that the entire international community, including Israelis and Palestinians themselves, knows that the solution to the Middle East conflict lies in the existence of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. Today's recognition of the State of Palestine by Spain, Norway and Ireland brings the number of countries that share this position to 146. "And very soon others will join us, like Slovenia, which will do so on Thursday. This is a very large majority of the international community," he said.
