ISRAEL, MOROCCO: TWO COLONIAL FORCES.
The decolonization of Africa has taken hundreds of years. It has been a difficult process in which a lot of African blood was also shed. Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom were the main colonizing countries. Spain was less intense, although with the same intention of not abandoning its colonies, no matter how small they were.
Africans had to make a long journey that began at the time of the slave trade until liberation movements and guerrillas were created, and the support framework of the organization of African unity (now converted into the African Union) emerged.
Ghana was the first African country to gain independence in March 1957 from the British Empire, when it was still called the "Gold Coast". Kwame Nkrumah was its first president.
It could be assumed that in the 21st century the process of decolonization of the african continent has ended, but it is not. One colony still exists, small but with the right to be independent: Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that has been illegally occupied by Morocco since 1975.
Western Sahara is, according to the UN, a non-autonomous territory, whose inhabitants have the right to be consulted to find out if they want to be an independent country or an autonomy led by Morocco.
The UN created a special mission (MINURSO) that was to prepare a self-determination referendum, but the hostility of Morocco has not made it possible to consult its population, mostly nomadic.
Morocco has known how to play the card of international illegality, with the aim that the UN and the friendly countries of the Kingdom will forget about the referendum. And you have to admit, he's had some hits. The United States recognizes that the territory belongs to Morocco. Israel has just said the same thing, in clear collusion between Rabat and Tel Aviv. Deception and violation of international law continue to exist.
There are few colonizing countries: Israel and Morocco are two of them. The UN points out that there are currently 55 territories under foreign control. This figure includes Caribbean countries that are formally independent, although they recognize the authority of the British monarchs.
What possibilities does Western Sahara have of being the theater of a self-determination referendum? Unfortunately, few: the Polisario Front is a liberation movement modeled on those that existed in Africa in other times. In February 1976, the Sahrawis founded a Republic (the SADR), which the African Union and several countries recognize. But it only occupies the 5th part of the territory. Morocco is the country that dominates it.
Israel, for its part, colonizes the territories it occupied in the "six-day" war in 1967. It militarily occupies the West Bank and the Golan Heights in Syria. He returned Sinai to Egypt and left Gaza, which is controlled by the radical Palestinian Hamas movement.
Israel and Morocco have signed a series of agreements that includes military aid from the Jewish state. The Alawite Kingdom, in order to maintain control of Western Sahara, "is capable of allying itself with the devil", some analysts point out,
