SWEDEN MAY becomes a member of NATO

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to back Sweden's bid to join NATO after a year of blocking the move, citing Turkish security concerns.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Monday that Erdogan agreed to forward Sweden's membership bid to Turkey's parliament.

Until now, Turkey has refused to support Sweden's entry into NATO due to the presence in the Scandinavian country of Kurdish PKK groups that oppose the Ankara regime. Sweden justified it by referring to “human rights”. The Turkish Parliament will have to ratify the change on Sweden, for the country to enter the Alliance, as has happened with Finland.

On the other hand, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff said on Thursday that Budapest would not block Sweden's NATO membership ratification.
