ARAB EMIRATES COMMIT SERIOUS POLITICAL MISTAKE
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken the same path as Saudi Arabia regarding the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara, by admitting that it is part of Morocco, which constitutes a violation of international law and the position of the United Nations.
Western Sahara is a non-autonomous territory that has never belonged to Morocco. The UN supports a decolonization process based on a referendum that Rabat refuses to accept. The Sahrawi people have, therefore, the right to say what they want to say through an internationally verified consultation.
Morocco relies on traditional friendships with other monarchies and Arab emirates to receive support that is incompatible with legality. The United States also agreed to consider the colony as part of Morocco during the presidency of Donald Trump.
The United Nations has a special envoy for Western Sahara, diplomat Stefan de Mistura, who recently visited South Africa to learn about this country's position, taking into account its diplomatic weight. Pretoria supports the referendum method of decolonization that Morocco rejects.
In reality, Western Sahara is the last African colony. All other territories have achieved independence. The former Spanish colony was militarily occupied by Morocco in 1975, when Spain withdrew in a shameful manner.
Thousands of Sahrawis live in refugee camps installed in the Algerian region of Tindouf in very difficult conditions. The “hamada” is the worst of the deserts, compared to the “Erg”, made up of dunes and oases.
It is evident that a people cannot be forced to be considered part of Morocco if they do not wish to do so. That is why it is important that the self-determination referendum can be held. Saudi Arabia and the Emirates would have to realize the political error of the position they maintain.
