THE END OF THE WAR IN SIX WEEKS?

The American president, Joe Biden, unveiled a peace plan for Gaza this Friday, ensuring that Israel could accept it, which means that the war in Gaza would take a serious step towards the end of hostilities in the martyred Palestinian enclave.

Biden's plan contains aspects that had already been presented by the mediating countries Qatar and Egypt, which had not achieved a change in Israel's positions, since Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that he wanted to continue the war until the elimination of Hamas.

Precisely, the leaders of Hamas have declared that they view the plan announced by the White House in a “positive way.” The first phase of this would be a six-week humanitarian pause. Hamas would release all hostages it holds, and the two sides would continue negotiating a permanent ceasefire. This aspect of the plan would open the way to the end of the war.

Biden has pointed out that Israel has to realize that at this time Hamas no longer has the strength to escalate violence against the Jewish state. According to the American president, both Israel and Hamas must understand that the plan “is a route to a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

The White House is optimistic about the position Netanyahu takes, estimating that if he rejects the plan, it would be a “serious affront” to the American president. But in reality, anything can be expected from Netanyahu.

It is also unknown whether Netanyahu would accept the phase of the plan that includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the areas of Gaza where the largest number of Palestinian refugees are accumulating.

Everything seems to indicate that this time, Biden has decided to act with some firmness so that Netanyahu and his government realize the impossibility of eliminating Hamas. And at the same time, the pressure from the Israeli population to release the hostages has reached a limit that the Israeli government has to take into account and give it the priority it has had since the beginning of the war.

“We are at a decisive moment,” Biden also said. These words lead to the realization that the Jewish population is fed up with Netanyahu and his now weakened position.
