A NEW STORM THREATENS EASTERN SPAIN
Two weeks after the storm that caused 223 deaths and enormous damage to homes and infrastructure in the Valencia region, in the east of Spain, it has been officially announced that a new storm is threatening these same regions, as well as part of southern Catalonia. Citizens are urged to avoid displacement and remain in their homes.
There is deep unrest among the affected people due to the delay in the arrival of first aid. There were even cases where in some towns, such as Alfafar, one of the most damaged, the French aid and rescue group (GFAR) arrived first and it took several hours for the first fire trucks and army protection units to arrive.
The mud continues to accumulate in the streets of most of the affected towns, obstructing the water drainage system. The real mountains of cars blocking the roads still remain in several towns, despite the great effort to clean up, carried out first and foremost by the residents.
Torrential rains of 180 m/h began to fall this morning in the area of Tarragona, south of Barcelona, where at least three nursing homes have had to be evacuated. Mud is the main problem and it is recalled that during a visit to the region made a few days ago by the King and Queen of Spain, Felipe VI and Leticia, pieces of rice were thrown at them, dirtying their clothes and even their own faces. It is difficult to imagine that there have been other monarchs in Europe who have been “muddied”.
For this Wednesday, dozens of town halls in the Valencia region, including that of Chiva, one of the most affected places, have suspended classes and closed public gyms due to the threat of new torrential rains.
Due to the current state of the municipality of Chiva, and in accordance with the information provided by the emergency services, school and sports activities will be suspended from tomorrow and until further notice," the town hall announced on X.
Forecasts indicate that 80 litres per square metre may fall in 30 minutes in various points of the areas threatened by this new storm . Mayors has recommended that citizens protect themselves: "No one should go near rivers, streams or the sea, because there is also a risk of waves." The warning will last from 6am on Wednesday.
