TRUMP WILLING TO RELEASE HOSTAGES AND END WAR
The president, Donald Trump, who will begin his second term in office in a few days, wants to give himself the prestige of ending the war in Gaza and freeing the 96 hostages held by Hamas. This would mean putting pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu, which would be a novelty in the attitude of the American politician.
Until now, Trump has allowed Netanyahu to continue his policy of war and not peace. He has always given him a free hand and has never opposed the decisions of the head of the Hebrew government.
If these predictions, from White House analysts, cited by Haaretz, were fulfilled, it would be the first time that Trump and Netanyahu would have different options to end a war in which 46,000 Palestinians have already died.
Has Trump become a humanitarian who wants peace? It is hard to believe, but given the impossibility of imposing an end to the war in Ukraine on his “friend” Putin, the head of the White House would turn his attention to Gaza and the hostages. Trump needs to enter his second term with some success.
He needs to show that, if on the one hand he intends the madness of buying Greenland, on the other he wants to be the man who made peace, wherever it may be, preferably Gaza because it means the release of the hostages.
Trump, for once, wants Netanyahu to give in to show the American public that their relations between the two characters are “very special” and that one must know how to give in even if it is a bitter pill for the Hebrew leader.
In the next few days we will see if this analysis of Trump's advisors wins the game or if they have to swallow a snake again. Panama is not so important now and can be put on hold. Gaza, on the other hand, with a huge death toll in Palestinians, can lead the president to ask Netanyahu to calm down for a while.
What role do mediators play in this scenario? Trump is willing to allow them to come out of this war with some prize, but the big winner, the only one who will win this game of poker, can be none other than Trump.
